Hi Michael, the questionnaire is a good start. This is one that is used by a guild of underground therapists in the US. We took many of the questions and added our own to get the information we need. The intake is the real screening tool!

Hi there:) the link for Spirit Pharmacist does not seem to be intact. Can you recommend another source for this info? “Consult the guide on Spirit Pharmacist to see which substances conflict with treatment and what the weaning off period is. ”

thx!

I agree. These are very useful screening questions, clearly developed out of extensive experience. What comes through to me is that safety is just as much an issue for the therapist as it is for the client. Therapists practicing in an underground environment need to exercise caution, because the usual safety nets of conventional practice are absent.

Thank you David. You are right, underground therapists are walking a tightrope of ethics and safety. We must conduct ourselves with professionalism and putting the safety of the client first. Transference is typically the greatest leverage we have but it can also backfire if your client (or you) become too attached. Safe use of self is crucial to a good treatment.
